Ok....I have been taking Avery to school now for six days. What an eye opener. School has changed a whole lot since I was there. The first day we (the parents), were sent home with a package of info. Inside there was a schedule of the next month and an overview of what to expect now that my child is in school. Some of it was stuff that I had heard about from other parents.....IE: each child must have a pair of Velcro shoes that they keep at school, each child must have a knapsack to carry home artwork etc... But what I wasn't expecting was the amount of fundraising that must happen in order for the school to apparently survive. She (Avery) was sent home with a magazine campaign to sell door to door to help raise money for the school. As if I would let her do that. Avery's teacher/parent day will also be an opportunity to raise money as they have a BBQ scheduled for after you meet the teacher where you donate money to basically chew on a hot dog. And.....each student must come in with a box of Kleenex to offset those costs in order for the kindergarten class to have more money to spend on arts and crafts. WTF? Isn't that what kindergarten is all about? Arts and Crafts? WOW. Her teacher, thankfully, is awesome. She keeps all the kids in line and she does it in very interesting ways. I could learn a lot from her. Now the parents are another story. BIZARRE. I think I just must be old fashioned I guess. But when I listen to some of these parents while waiting for Avery to be dismissed, I just find their lifestyles to be a bit over the top. One woman was chatting to another about having her one year old "adjusted" at the chiropractor. You know, because coming out of the birth canal can put an enormous amount of pressure on the spine..........*Gag...blech...roll eyes.*
But the good news is that Avery loves her time at school. She tells me she is going to miss me every time she goes into the school but when she comes out, she is happier than heck that I am there waiting. What a great feeling.
